How to Use the ICM Payout Calculator

  1. Set how many players are left - from 2 up to a full final table of 9.
  2. Enter each player's current chip stack - exactly as shown on the clock or tournament software.
  3. Enter the remaining prize money for each place - 1st through however many places are still paid - leave later places at 0 if they're already guaranteed the min-cash.
  4. Click Calculate equity - and each player's exact ICM equity appears, alongside what a simple chip-percentage split would have given them.

Why Chip Percentage Isn't Equity

Splitting the remaining prize money by chip percentage feels intuitive, but it ignores what actually determines a payout: finishing position, not chip count. A chip leader with 40% of the chips doesn't have a 40% claim on the money - they still have to survive down to 1st to earn the biggest payout, and busting drops them straight to the min-cash just like anyone else. A short stack, by contrast, has less left to lose - their downside is capped at the min-cash they're already close to.

ICM captures that asymmetry exactly, by computing the real probability of each player finishing in each remaining paid position given the actual stacks, then weighting each position's payout by that probability. That's why the "Ξ” vs chip share" column above is rarely zero - it's the whole reason ICM deals exist instead of everyone just splitting by stack size.

How the Calculation Works

This calculator uses the standard Malmuth-Harville ICM model: the probability any given player finishes 1st is their share of the total chips in play. Given who finishes 1st, the probability of who finishes 2nd is recalculated from the remaining players' chips, and so on down through every remaining paid position. Each player's equity is the sum of every remaining payout, weighted by their exact probability of landing on it.

Computed exactly (not simulated) via a subset-based dynamic program rather than checking every possible finishing order directly - which becomes far too slow past a handful of players. That's also why this tool caps out at 9 players: ICM in practice is used for exactly this range, from heads-up through a full final table, not for calculating equity across an entire field.

What is ICM in poker?

ICM stands for Independent Chip Model. It's the standard method for converting tournament chip stacks into real-money equity, based on the actual probability of finishing in each remaining paid position given the current stacks. It's what tournament software and deal-making tools use behind the scenes.

Why isn't my equity just my percentage of the chips in play?

Because chips aren't cash until you finish - only your placement pays. A big stack has a lot to lose (busting from 1st to a min-cash is a huge swing), while a short stack has less left to lose. That's why a chip leader's equity is usually below their chip percentage, and a short stack's equity is usually above it.

Is this the same as the Payout Calculator?

No. The Payout Calculator designs a payout curve from finish-place percentages before a tournament starts - no chip stacks involved. This tool takes the actual remaining stacks and remaining prize money and computes real equity for the players still in it, which is what deal-making is actually based on.

Can I use this to make a real deal at the final table?

Yes - this is the same exact math (the Malmuth-Harville model) that professional deal-making software uses. Most real deals start from these numbers, then get adjusted by negotiation - for example agreeing to leave a small amount extra for whoever ends up winning, on top of the pure ICM split.

How many players can I calculate ICM for?

This calculator supports 2 to 9 players, covering everything from heads-up to a full final table - the range ICM is actually used for in practice. It isn't meant for calculating equity across a full field of 50+ entrants; that's a very different problem the Payout Calculator solves instead.

Does the calculation account for antes, the blinds, or who's on the button?

No, and neither does standard ICM anywhere else - it only looks at chip stacks and remaining prize money. Real skill, position, and upcoming blind pressure all matter for actual decisions, but they sit outside the ICM model itself, which is deliberately just about stack-to-equity conversion.
